Save on a Home Battery with the New Government Rebate
From 1 July 2025, eligible Australians can access the federal battery rebate of up to $3,720 on a 10kWh battery system through the Cheaper Home Batteries Program. This should make it more affordable to store energy from solar panels and reduce electricity bills.

How Much Is the Solar Battery Rebate?
Your solar battery rebate QLD discount depends on various factors, including your battery’s:
- Usable capacity
- Installation and certification date
- Applicable STC factor
- Certificate price
- Administration costs
However, overall, the Cheaper Home Batteries Program offers up to $372 per usable kilowatt-hour (kWh) of battery capacity (before fees). After fees, the average customer saves about $330 per kWh, which could reduce the upfront cost of a 10kWh home battery by around $3,300.
For larger battery systems, the STC factor applies at:
- 100% for the first 14 usable kWh
- 60% for capacity above 14kWh to 28kWh
- 15% for capacity above 28kWh to 50kWh
Larger batteries do not receive the same per-kWh discount across their full usable capacity.
Who Is Eligible for the Cheaper Home Batteries Program?
You may qualify for the federal battery rebate if your battery system meets the following criteria:
- Between 5kWh and 100kWh in nominal capacity (Only the first 50kWh of usable capacity are rebate-eligible)
- Installed by, or under the on-site supervision of, a Solar Accreditation Australia battery-accredited installer
- Uses a Clean Energy Council–approved solar battery system and eligible inverter
- Capable of connecting to a Virtual Power Plant (VPP) when connected to the electricity grid (participation not required)
- Solar installation on a residential home, small business, or community building
- Connected to a new or existing solar PV system
- You are installing solar for permanent use (not portable or resold)
- Not an electric vehicle or portable energy storage device
You may also upgrade or expand an existing battery power system if it hasn’t previously received the rebate and the added capacity is at least 5kWh, with total nominal capacity no greater than 100kWh.
Battery installations must meet electrical compliance requirements. Support is available only once per premises.

Small-scale Technology Certificates (STCs)
Solar water heaters, heat pumps and rooftop solar systems are great for the environment, and the Australian Government Renewable Energy Target scheme provides a mechanism that offers generous incentives to help you make the switch. The incentives come in the form of Small-scale Technology Certificates (STCs), which you can trade and sell on the open market or use as an upfront discount to reduce the purchase price of your new system.
STCs are available in every state of Australia. However, the number of certificates you can create per system depends on its geographical location (zone) and varies by type, system size, model, and installation year. The value of an STC is not fixed and varies depending on market factors.
^For a Solahart Solar Hot Water system, each STC represents 1 megawatt-hour (MWh) of electricity displaced over a 10-year period. For a Solahart Solar Power system, each STC represents 1 megawatt-hour (MWh) of renewable electricity produced over a maximum deeming period. The number of STC's created varies with the size and model of the solar water heater, new solar panels, or PV system and the region (or zone) in which the unit is installed.
